Scruffy Cullen

I know this is completely off topic, but my wife took a funny picture of our dog, and well…I couldn’t help touching it up a bit:

Family Traditions

Being a wedding photographer, I tend to see wide variety of traditions throughout my job.  Sure there are the obvious ones: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”, bride and groom not seeing each other before the ceremony, etc., but sometimes I like to think how other traditions have evolved throughout the years to what they have become today.  If you think about it, almost every aspect of a wedding (including the rehearsal dinner, bridal showers, bachelor/bachelorette parties) are steeped in tradition.  I’ve been reading an article over on Bride & Groom about the history of wedding traditions.  Its a great article if you have a few minutes to read.  Surprisingly the idea of a “wedding party” dates back to a time when it was more of a “raiding party”.  We’re talking forcefully taking (a.k.a. kidnapping) a bride here.  Lets be glad some traditions don’t hold over their original meanings.

One thing that’s not mentioned in the article is the variety of vows that brides and grooms are using today.  My wife and I decided to be very traditional in our vows (“to have and to hold, from this day forth…etc”) but we’re seeing more and more couples get creative with this part of the ceremony.  A quick Google search turns up tons of great examples:

I _____, take you ______, to be my wedded wife. To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness or in health, to love and to cherish ‘till death do us part. And hereto I pledge you my faithfulness.

I, (name), take you, (name), to be my (husband/wife), my constant friend, my faithful partner and my love from this day forward. In the presence of God, our family and friends, I offer you my solemn vow to be your faithful partner in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, and in joy as well as in sorrow. I promise to love you unconditionally, to support you in your goals, to honor and respect you, to laugh with you and cry with you, and to cherish you for as long as we both shall live.

I, (name), take you, (name), to be my partner, loving what I know of you, and trusting what I do not yet know. I eagerly anticipate the chance to grow together, getting to know the (man/woman) you will become, and falling in love a little more every day. I promise to love and cherish you through whatever life may bring us.
